Several US Democratic MPs have sent a letter requesting a statement from the head of the General Services Administration (GSA), which has so far refused to hand over official duties to US President-elect Joe Biden.
“His action, which leads to a blockade of the legally required transition, has serious consequences,” deputies in the United States House of Representatives wrote on Thursday (local time) to the head of the agency, Emily Murphy, appointed by the President Donald Trump.
They requested to speak to Murphy on Monday. They did not rule out a public hearing summons.
Biden is sworn in on January 20
In the United States, preparations for a change of power usually begin immediately after the election of a new president. The GSA has not yet given the green light to Biden’s transition team to work with government agencies. In reality, Biden and his team would have access to confidential government information, authorities and ministries before taking office.
The transition period from the election to the inauguration is more than two months. According to estimates by the US media, Democrat Biden has 306 constituencies behind him and needs 270 for the presidential election. Trump, who does not recognize the result, has so far had 232 voters.

“We can not wait any longer”
The law on the transfer of official business gives the GSA an important role. After the election, Murphy must determine who are the “obviously successful candidates” for president and vice president. The transfer of office can only be formally started with your letter, which is normally considered a formality. Murphy has yet to recognize Biden and his vice president Kamala Harris as winners of the election.
With their actions, they undermine an orderly transfer of power and undermine the new government’s ability to respond to the crown pandemic and deal with dire economic consequences, the letter says. “We have been extremely patient, but we cannot wait any longer.” It is Murphy’s responsibility to initiate the transition.
