Luke Letlow would have traveled to Washington next Sunday and would have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and fulfill his duties, so God help him. In the United States House of Representatives, the Republican would have represented the fifth constituency in Louisiana for the next two years. But Letlow is dead.
“MP-elect Luke Letlow, 41, died tonight at Ochsner-LSU Health Shreveport hospital from complications from Covid-19,” his spokesman Andrew Bautsch said on the deceased’s Facebook page. On December 19, the father of two was admitted with a corona infection and has been treated in the intensive care unit since December 22. As reported in the US media, Letlow had no known prior illnesses.
“The family thanks you for the many prayers and support over the past few days, but asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult and unexpected time,” writes Bautsch. A statement from the family will be announced at a later date.
Against masks, for crown relaxation
Letlow won the November 6 election with 62 percent of the vote – the district is firmly in Republican hands. Before his election, the computer scientist had worked for his predecessor in the parliamentary office.
During the election campaign, Letlow did not wear a mask several times. Numerous photos from the last few weeks show him unprotected for his mouth and nose, even at his victory party in early December.
The Republican campaigned massively to ease the crown’s measures. “We have been careful and I believe that both the state and federal level have taken numerous precautionary measures for Covid-19. We are now at a point where we are in real danger if we don’t open up our economy, ”he said in early October. Shortly after his election, he said that one had to learn to “live in a Covid world.”
According to the New York Times, Louisiana (4.65 million residents) had 304,485 corona cases and 7,397 deaths Tuesday night, with about half the population, about the same number of deaths per corona as Switzerland (6,909 corona Dead ).
Top Democrat Pelosi offers her condolences
The unexpected death of the politician caused great consternation in the political fields. Louisiana Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards urged people to pray for Letlow’s family and announced that they would hang the flags at half mast on the day of the funeral.
“We are devastated,” said the Louisiana delegation of national representatives and senators. “Luke had such a positive spirit and an immensely bright future ahead of him.”
Senior Democrat Nancy Pelosi, Congresswoman from California and Speaker of the US House of Representatives, said: “Tonight, the US House of Representatives mourns the loss of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow.” (relationship)
