Ursula von der Leyen has chaired the EU Commission for a year. In the dispute over the rule of law with Hungary and Poland, he was finally able to demonstrate leadership. But, instead, German is remarkably holding back.
It is a crisis within a crisis. In the midst of the pandemic, two countries are blocking the EU budget and the aid associated with the reconstruction of the crown for the continent. Because the payment of the billions is tied to compliance with the rule of law, Hungary and Poland have vetoed. That is more than a classic conflict of interest, because here the 27 Member States do not even agree on what they have in common beyond money. So these are fundamental questions in Brussels, of sovereignty and solidarity.
