Swiss banks have standardized the user interface of their ATMs. At the same time, new functions are also possible at the ATM, such as withdrawing money via smartphone.

Don’t be surprised if the screen looks strange the next time you withdraw cash at an ATM: under the leadership of financial services provider SIX, banks have equipped their machines with standardized software.

The change was completed at the end of last week, SIX reported Tuesday. This means that all ATMs in Switzerland now have the same user interface and user guide. So far there have been more than 25 different systems.

Swiss bank customers can now access all functions at other banks’ ATMs. There are also new features such as withdrawals and deposits via QR codes, free account selection for cash withdrawals, a more individual choice of issued tickets and an audio function for the visually impaired. However, banks must activate the new features first.

Now it is also possible to withdraw cash via smartphone. At several major and cantonal banks, customers were already able to withdraw money with their mobile phones, SIX writes. The feature is continuously activated on other devices.

With the software change, SIX is now processing all transactions and entries at ATMs. It also offers banks the monitoring and control of ATMs. The first banks have already outsourced it to SIX, the message said. Currently, SIX works with several banks on other solutions such as cash control or the installation and maintenance of ATMs.
