The crown-related curfew has sparked protests and riots in the Netherlands. In the small town of Urk north of Amsterdam, dozens of people protested against the curfew on Saturday night, police said Sunday.
They threw stones and fireworks at police officers and shot down police cars. According to police, the youths set fire to a health department corona testing center. Two people were arrested and dozens of fines were imposed.
Illegal party with 100 guests
Nationwide, police said they imposed more than 3,600 fines and arrested 25 people on the first night of the curfew. There were also clashes with the police in Stein, in the south of the country, when officers tried to end an illegal party with around 100 visitors.
On Saturday night, a curfew went into effect for the first time since the start of the corona pandemic. Citizens must remain in their homes from 9 pm to 4:30 am Violations are punishable by fines of 95 euros each. (SDA)
