The situation in the labor market is deteriorating again. After the unemployment rate stood at 3.2 percent in July, it was 3.3 percent in August. A total of 151’111 people in Switzerland were registered as unemployed at the regional job placement centers (RAV) in August.
The increase, 2,241 more unemployed compared to the previous month, is at first glance less strong than expected. However, compared to the previous year, the increase is massive. Compared to August 2019, the number is now significantly higher, namely at 51,559 people. At that time, that is, in the pre-Crown period, the rate was still 2.1 percent.
Significantly younger unemployed
Disaggregated by age, unemployment increased especially among children. The rate among 15-24 year olds rose to 3.9 percent after being 3.4 percent the previous month.
Among those aged 25 to 49 (3.4 percent) and those aged 50 to 64 (2.9 percent), the rates were unchanged compared to the previous month.
Francophone Switzerland more affected than German-speaking Switzerland
Compared to other cantons, the cantons of Western Switzerland rank at the top. The cantons of Geneva (5.2%), Jura (5.1%), Neuchâtel (4.9%) and Vaud (4.7%) have higher than average unemployment rates.
Among the German-speaking cantons, Basel-Stadt ranks first with an unemployment rate of 4 percent compared to the previous month.
237,215 registered job seekers
La Seco, meanwhile, registered a total of 237,215 job applicants in August, 1,453 more than the previous month. Meanwhile, the number of vacancies reported to the RAV has decreased by 243 to 35,052. Of these, 20,353 were subject to the information requirement.
As usual, information on part-time work was also provided. However, officially, June values are only available. At that time, according to the information, 488,312 people were affected by the reduced working hours after a million or just under 900,000 in the “closing months of Corona” April and May. (uro / SDA)
