“But please with cream” or “Greek wine”: all children know the songs of Udo Jürgens (1934 – 2014). But who owned the hits after the hit icon’s death was controversial for years. On Friday, the Zurich District Court has now in the dispute between the children of Jürgens, John (56), Jenny (53), Sonja (55) and Gloria Burda (26) and their last partner Michaela Moritz (50) against his company Freddy Burger, longtime manager, decided.
“Udo Jürgens Master AG” has to transfer the performance rights of the songs to the family of the deceased artist. This means that Jürgens’ children and partner can decide on the publication and use of the hits. In addition, John, Jenny, Sonja and Gloria Burda and Michaela Moritz now make more money from the catalog of hits.
Several 100,000 euros a year through songs
With a pop star like Juergens, that’s a decent amount. According to the “Bild”, the more than 1000 songs still generate several 100,000 euros a year. “But please, with cream” should only contribute up to 50,000 euros.
Plaintiff John Jürgens is pleased with the verdict and shoots Freddy Burger hard in his statement. “Finally it becomes clear that the manager of Papa’s wanted to illegally take the rights under the nail,” says the heir. “We were able to successfully defend our father’s musical legacy. Then we can keep it on your mind. And we will continue to do so. ”
Burger doesn’t want to be specific
In response to a request from BLICK, Burger points out that the Jürgens family did not complain directly against him in the proceedings, but against the company “Udo Jürgens Master AG”, of which he is Chairman of the Board of Directors. “We have taken note of the verdict and are considering whether we want to continue the case,” says the old friend of the success icon. “But I still can’t say anything specifically about it.”
The collaboration between Jürgens and Burger lasted almost 40 years. “It was actually like a good marriage,” the manager of the relationship with his protégé said in an earlier interview with “SonntagsBlick.” “We share almost everything.” In Juergens’ will, the Zurich man was therefore listed as a legatee.
