Four years of Donald Trump (74), and the president of the United States is still amazing! Very aggressive in the first debate, suddenly calm, collected and mostly objective in the second and last television duel. Trump did everything tactically right Thursday night in Nashville.
Even before the debate, it was clear that the Republican would have to change strategy. But is Donald Trump suddenly the gentleman? Even Joe Biden (77) was visibly surprised. The Democrat first had to get used to a completely different situation.
And Biden quickly went too far at first. It was he who became aggressive at the first question and played with the man. This time he held back with insults, but the Democrat was always louder, more emotional, and often more casual in language than his counterpart.
Trump, however, has struck the balancing act: sober offense. After the topic block on the coronavirus pandemic, he pinned Biden for a good hour, raising questions about his past and his family. What often seems stubborn or malicious almost seemed like a decent review that night.
Trump has realized that he cannot win the presidential election with his loyal voter base, which is estimated at 35 percent. You have to re-enroll voters who don’t like you but prefer your politics. According to polls, suburban women in particular have deserted the president of the United States in droves. They may be able to return to “Gentleman” Trump.
The president of the United States has also shown himself capable of learning, and Americans have received substantial discussion between the two candidates. This is good news for American democracy.
The big question now is: How forgetful are Americans? Trump was also more conciliatory two weeks before the 2016 election, and he was rewarded for it. However, upon reaching the White House, Trump never took the step to become a worthy president.
Trump’s presidential appearance Thursday night was a final attempt to win back an election that seemed lost. Whether that was successful remains to be seen. But the president of the United States has certainly changed the dynamics of this electoral campaign again.
After four years of Donald Trump, only one thing is clear: He did not become a thoughtful president overnight. It was an excellent show. Nothing more and nothing less.
