- YB can build on its good starting position in Group A of the Europa League and is in the sixteenth final.
- The Bernese won against Cluj in Wankdorf with 2: 1 despite a late deficit.
- Only in the chaotic final phase did the Berners manage to score two goals.
- You can read here how the last decisions were made in the other groups.
Suddenly it was in Wankdorf between the Young Boys and Romanian champion Cluj after an uneventful game. Cluj goalkeeper Cristian Balgradean hit Cédric Zesiger’s head and the ball at the same time in the 90th minute when the score was 0: 1 in the penalty area.
Referee Benoît Bastien immediately signaled the point and took Balgradean off the field, a controversial decision with which the guests did not agree at all.
But YB’s top scorer, Jean-Pierre Nsame, didn’t care. The French confidently scored 1: 1. Soon after, Nsame also flew off the field for a seemingly harmless foul in the 95th minute. Cluj then threw everything forward, giving YB opportunities to counter. Gianluca Gaudino took advantage of one in minute 6 of injury time to make it 2-1.
YB inhibited for a long time
The Bernese had previously had trouble finding access to defense. Furthermore, Gerardo Seoane’s team seemed self-conscious and did not bring the eagerness to win on the artificial turf at Wankdorf.
David von Ballmoos always avoided a deficit with big saves. In the 84th minute he was powerless. Gabriel Debeljuh scored after a shot from the post, but started from a tight offside position.
This was followed by the dramatic final phase, thanks to which the Bernese qualified for the next round.
So it goes
In Group A, in addition to Young Boys, AS Roma also progress to the knockout phase. The Romans had already been confirmed as group winners, played CSKA Sofia with a B-Elf at the end of the group stage and lost 3-1 on the road.
The draw for the round of 32 will take place on December 14 in Nyon, the matches themselves will be played on February 18 and 25.
