The heads of state and government of major economic powers continued their G20 summit on Sunday with discussions on climate change. At the end of the two-day video conference, a joint statement will be approved, which will focus on fighting the corona pandemic. A commitment to a fair global distribution of vaccines is expected. In addition, the G20 is likely to set itself the goal of jointly stimulating the world economy and promising the poorest countries more debt relief.
When it comes to climate change, the group, which unites 85 percent of the world’s economic power, is unlikely to find a common denominator, as it has in recent years. The reason for this was and is the withdrawal of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, from the UN climate agreement in Paris to reduce greenhouse gases. All other G20 countries support the agreement.
For the still US President Donald Trump (74), the summit is likely to be the last appearance on the great international stage. However, on the first day he showed very limited interest in the conference. The video switch had not been working for two hours when the United States’ elected but still-in-office president left the White House to drive to his golf club in nearby Virginia. Photos showed Trump a little later in a red blouse and white cap playing golf.
Trump calls for vote recount in Georgia
After the narrow victory of his Democratic rival Joe Biden (77) in the presidential elections in the US state of Georgia, Trump has now requested a recount in the state. The corresponding request was submitted on Saturday, his campaign team said. Trump’s lawyers said this was to ensure that all legal votes were counted. Previously, several lawsuits by Trump’s lawyers against the election results in Georgia, as in several other states, had failed in court. Trump had until Tuesday to request another recount. He was able to do this because the gap between the candidates is less than 0.5 percentage points.
Georgia had already checked the ballot papers herself. Then, Biden’s lead over Trump was reduced from around 14,000 to 12,670 votes. Responsible Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (65) and Governor Brian Kemp (57) had confirmed the results on Friday afternoon. Biden won the votes of all 16 state electors. Judge Steven Grimberg had dismissed the lawsuit of a conservative lawyer on Friday night (local time), with which he wanted to stop the authentication of the result of the elections in Georgia.
Trump’s legal team explained the request for a recount by stating that they insist on an “honest vote count” that must include signature comparisons and other important safeguards. Let’s stop giving people bad results. There has to be a time when we stop counting the illegal votes. I hope he comes soon ”, he said.
New legal defeat of Trump in the fight against the electoral results
Meanwhile, a federal court in Pennsylvania has handed Trump another defeat in his battle against the election results. Trump’s attorneys had only presented “worthless proven legal arguments and speculative allegations” without evidence, Judge Matthew Brann wrote in a statement released Saturday night (local time) for his decision.
The injunction requested by Trump to prevent Pennsylvania from certifying the election results was rejected. Trump’s lawsuit was also aimed at potentially invalidating millions of absentee votes. The arguments and evidence presented would not even have been sufficient to invalidate the vote of “a single voter,” the judge wrote. “Our people, our laws and institutions demand more,” he wrote.
