The Nov. 3 vote was “a complete fraud,” Trump said Sunday in a telephone interview with Fox News. In the nearly hour-long conversation, Trump renewed his claims that many dead had voted and that the increase in mail-in votes resulted in “massive fraud.”
So far, Trump has not provided reliable evidence of the alleged election fraud that he has been talking about for weeks. The US courts have already thrown out numerous lawsuits aimed at challenging the election results and their Republican allies. It was only on Friday that a federal judge who had once been nominated by Trump had dismissed a major lawsuit in the state of Pennsylvania as unfounded. US officials and state election officials have rated the vote safe and successful; there are no known cases of major fraud.
Trump (74) continues to refuse to recognize the electoral victory of Democrat Joe Biden (78). When asked by conservative Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo if there was still a road to victory for him despite the court losses, Trump said, “I hope so.” He claimed he received “thousands, tens of thousands” more votes than Biden in the decisive states. Social media, and especially the media, which he again referred to as “enemies of the people,” suppressed the truth, Trump said.
Trump also complained that it was very difficult to bring his accusations to the Supreme Court in Washington. Trump expects a home game there because six of the nine judges are considered conservatives, three of whom were nominated by him. “You need a Supreme Court willing to make a really important decision,” he said. Trump’s failed lawsuits in the lower courts make the Supreme Court’s hopes seem unrealistic. Also, even a favorable verdict on a dispute in one state would not be enough to help you win.
Biden was declared the winner by the American media after the elections. By current tally, he was able to secure the votes of 306 voters, significantly more than the 270 votes needed for a victory. The electoral college will elect the next president and vice president on December 14. The result of the vote will not be officially announced until January 6. In view of the known electoral results, both steps are considered formalities. Biden (78) will be sworn in on January 20.
Trump has rarely appeared in public since the election. He avoided asking journalists questions until Thursday. When asked by a reporter, he said he would leave the White House of his own free will if Biden were elected by the electoral college. Trump declined to comment on speculation that he plans to run again for president in 2024.
After the election, the Trump administration initially refused to initiate the orderly and legally required handover (“transition”) to Biden. On Monday, however, the relevant agency relented and paved the way for the Democrat and his team to have access to ministries, agencies and confidential government information, as well as millions of dollars in salaries and other expenses, before the inauguration. This Monday, Biden is supposed to receive the strictly confidential report from the secret services for the first time, which normally only goes to the president.
