Truck driver (28) falls down a slope and is seriously injured

The truck with Graubünden license plates was coming down from the Oberalp pass towards Andermatt when the 28-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle in a right turn for unknown reasons, as announced on Tuesday by the Uri canton police. He fell about 15 meters down a slope onto the train track. The driver was seriously injured, material damage amounting to about 190,000 francs.

During the skid, the truck lost loaded debris flow material. A car approaching from Uri was damaged by falling material. His handlebar remained unharmed. Rega, for his part, took the injured truck driver to a hospital outside the canton.

Great damage to the railway line

At the request of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn said that the catenary and the foundations of the railway line were damaged. Repairs will last until October 16. Rail traffic is disrupted, replacement buses will run between Andermatt and Disentis GR until further notice.

The Oberalppassstrasse had to be temporarily closed for rescue and clean-up work. According to cantonal police, further traffic obstructions are expected on the overpass on Tuesday.
