First, German Federal Police officials found 250,000 euros in the specially prepared shoe soles of the 50-year-old who wanted to fly from the West German city to Turkey. Customs officers called and found another 100,000 euros in the man’s underwear. A spokesman for the authorities said Thursday that he had kept them there “floating freely, hoping they would not look there.” The sum of money consisted mainly of 500 euro notes.
According to customs, he got the money from a friend and should transport it to Turkey. However, he did not remember the name or contact details of this acquaintance.
Officials secured the money. Now it is checked if it comes from legal sources or if there are signs of money laundering. The 50-year-old is also under investigation for failing to register the cash. The find was made two weeks ago, but customs didn’t report it until Thursday. Customs indicated that cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared upon entry and exit.
