What is still possible during the summer holidays that are in the shadow of Corona? The EU Commission today announced the flexibilization roadmap, which gives hope for travel destinations somewhat more varied than balconies and sofas.
We are all responsible for ensuring that we can travel safely this summer.
“Of course, no one should travel if they feel sick,” EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said at the press conference. “We are all responsible for ensuring that we can travel safely this summer.” With the measures presented, the EU would like to allow safe summer tourism. Because there would also be millions of jobs related to tourism.
The schedule for traveling in Europe includes the following:
Resumption of tourist services: The Commission wants to guarantee the gradual resumption of tourism with common criteria. This also applies to the development of health records for hotels and other accommodations to protect the health of guests and employees.
These criteria include epidemiological evidence, sufficient capacities of the health system, monitoring, control and testing capacities, as well as the identification of contact persons. The guidelines allow you to stay safe in hotels, campgrounds, bed and breakfasts or other vacation accommodations, eat and drink in restaurants, bars and cafes, and visit beaches and other outdoor entertainment areas.
Freedom of movement and lifting of controls at internal borders: Free movement and cross-border travel are the key to tourism. Therefore, flat-rate restrictions on freedom of movement in the EU should be replaced by more specific measures and flexible intervention.
The Swiss border with Germany, France and Austria is expected to reopen starting June 15. According to the Federal Council, the border with Italy will remain for the time being.
Restoration of traffic services: Transport services across the EU are expected to start slowly while protecting the health of employees and passengers. Guidelines apply such as keeping distance, avoiding contact with employees, different waiting rooms and limiting the number of places if necessary.
The EU Commission recommends that a mask be worn for air travel in times of the crown pandemic. Joint roadmaps for safe traffic are also being worked with neighboring countries.
Cross-border tracking applications: With the support of the Commission, EU Member States have agreed guidelines to ensure cross-border interoperability of tracking applications. This is intended to warn tourists when traveling within the EU of a possible infection with the coronavirus.
Travel coupons should be more attractive: In accordance with EU regulations, travelers are entitled to choose between coupons or a cash refund for canceled transport tickets (plane, train, bus and ferry) or tour packages. The Commission’s recommendation reaffirms this right, but at the same time aims to make coupons a more attractive alternative to reimburse canceled trips. For example, coupons must be protected from bankruptcy by the exhibitor, be valid for at least 12 months, and be refundable after a maximum of one year if not redeemed.
