Close time differences and Max Verstappen’s fastest time marked the first day of training for the Belgian Grand Prix.
At a good 7 kilometers, the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is the longest route on the Formula 1 calendar. However, the results lists at the top were characterized by narrow gaps.
Mercedes not at full power?
Verstappen at Red Bull was 48-96 thousandths faster than Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) and Hamilton (Mercedes) in the afternoon. In the morning, Valtteri Bottas had topped the standings ahead of his teammate Hamilton and Verstappen.
The fact that the Mercedes drivers qualified behind Ricciardo in the second practice session could be due to the fact that they had probably switched off with reduced engine power.
Ferrari in misery
