The accident happened on Sunday. Authorities announced Tuesday that a 12-year-old boy and his guide were victims of a shark on a coral reef near Sharm el-Sheikh. The boy and his mother, tourists from Ukraine, went diving with their guide.
The crash site in Ras Mohammed National Park is popular with divers with its dive sites. There, the oceanic shark attacked the group. The wounded, who were bleeding profusely, were taken to hospital. As announced by the Ukrainian tourism authority, the twelve-year-old boy is in intensive care.
Despite the emergency operation, the boy’s torn hand could not save. They had to amputate his forearm. The boy suffered deep bite wounds on his back. The guide lost his leg, the mother left with “deep wounds”. Two other people in the group suffered minor injuries.
Authorities are closing dive sites
Egyptian authorities said underwater video footage showed the shark behaving abnormally and hostile towards humans. The dive sites in the area have been temporarily closed. The predator is said to be a whitetip shark.
Shark attacks in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt are extremely rare. The last fatal attack happened ten years ago. The national park at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula is a popular destination near Sharm el-Sheikh, one of Egypt’s largest tourist destinations and a major source of foreign exchange in the country.
