- Irishman Sam Bennett wins the final sprint of stage 10 of the Tour de France.
- Thanks to two excursions, Stefan Küng was voted the most combative rider on the stage.
- Primoz Roglic’s «Maillot jaune» is not attacked.
With 15 km from the finish, Stefan Küng tried for the second time to get away from the field. However, the Thurgau was recaptured some 100 m later. After all: Küng achieved the red starting number of the most combative rider on an otherwise quieter stage.
Shortly after the start of the 168.5 km, Küng and his compatriot Michael Schär had already moved away from the field. Meanwhile, the two had taken a nearly two-minute lead. However, the excursion ended again with almost 100 km to go.
Premier winner in tears
So there was a final sprint at the end. In this, Sam Bennett prevailed just ahead of Caleb Ewan and Peter Sagan. For the Irishman, it’s the first stage victory in the Tour de France, so he was excited in the subsequent winner’s interview.
Leader Primoz Roglic crossed the finish line with the first part of the field and will continue to drive in the yellow jersey.
The stage from the Île d’Oléron to the Île de Ré along the Atlantic coast was marked by many smaller and smaller jumps. Because there was sometimes a strong wind, athletes had to drive out of the wind to accept more dangerous driving.
So it goes
The trips to the sea have ended, the drivers return inland. Wednesday’s 11th stage, which starts at Châtelaillon-Plage, is predestined for a sprint finish in Poitiers. There is only one climb in the 4th category.
