▶ Yann Sommer’s explanation about the two penalty shootouts
▶ Petkovic analysis
Sommer was recently criticized in the German media, perhaps that’s why he gets a little nervous at first. In the 10th minute he’s lucky his short break goes unpunished, a little later he lets a failed flank almost slip into his gloves.
After that, he remains flawless and has made several strong saves. The highlight, of course: the two saved penalties by Sergio Ramos, although very poorly shot. He is absolutely powerless when it comes to conceding a goal. Sommer silences his critics and gets top marks.
Elvedi’s positional play is excellent. It always hits the spot and can often clear up dire need situations. Only once is he late: in the 79th minute, he sabotages Álvaro Morata in the penalty area, which gives a penalty and a yellow card. And because Elvedi was warned early on, he was sent off the field, which means that Switzerland will miss the “final” against Ukraine on Tuesday. Luckily, Sommer saved the penalty. In the end, Elvedi’s tackle is perhaps the deciding piece of the puzzle to keep the league going.
The defensive boss keeps the defense together, brings calm to the Swiss preparation game and is not so bad at shooting the ball. He does not fall up or down, as a central defender would like. Strong game.
Rodriguez plays behind the back three and therefore does not often dare to go on offense. The exception: his dangerous free kick in the 29th minute. With an unnecessary hand he gives the Spaniards the first penalty, otherwise he acts very focused and has the powerhouse Adama Traore under control in the final minutes.
Due to Silvan Widmer’s short-term failure (positive corona test), Edimilson moves to the starting lineup. And it does a very good job. Start the 1-0 with a smart pass along the line. His entry is very strong in the 62nd minute, probably avoiding a draw earlier. However, when he concedes a goal (89th), he is partly guilty because he is too far from the opponent.
How he drops the ball into the corner from 15 meters with his weak left hand: fantastic! Otherwise, Freuler focuses primarily on defensive work and does it without a hitch.
Lead the national team loudly from back to front: Rescue Olmo who is ready to shoot in minute 6 and helps with the pressure to the front. Shortly before the break he loses sight of Ferran Torres in a corner and is lucky that his rival does not succeed. Otherwise he wins a lot of duels and hardly makes a bad pass.
Little or nothing passes his left side. In the 52nd minute he finally has room, but he doesn’t get enough of the situation. He is in a difficult position against Barça defender Sergi Roberto and is out of work after 70 minutes.
A bad pass here, a failed dribble there: Shaqiri doesn’t want to be very successful in the first half. After the break, he has more spaces and knows how to use them: his long pass over Seferovic (55th) is strong, but unfortunately too imprecise a pass to Embolo (63rd). It is not his best game, but Shaqiri is at the service of the team and works a lot backwards. It is replaced after 70 minutes.
He annoys the Spaniards with his defiant attitude in setting up the game and initiates the first Swiss chance with his winning ball (18th). He always tries to be playable, also with the 1-0 goal, where he picks up the ball deep in his own half of the summer and thus initiates the attack himself. With his speed he then leaves Sergio Ramos and takes the center to perfection to the scorer Freuler. Embolo does not shy away from a duel and is once again the most dangerous Swiss. He will be booked in the 59th minute.
Less dedicated than Embolo. The game more or less passes it by. Until the 55th minute and his big chance: After goalkeeper Unai Simon passed the ball, Seferovic has the empty goal in mind, but hesitates too much and Ramos can save the line. Bad luck for the striker! But one thing remains to be noted: defensively, he does his job in an exemplary manner and is never bad enough to rush to his own half of the field. That is exactly what is needed against the strong Spanish.
