It has become silent around the double-decker train called FV-Dosto. It works reliably and traveler complaints have been largely silenced. This is also reflected in the MDBI value, which is important for reliability, as the CH Media newspapers report. In September it was 8079 kilometers. The value measures the average distances between two incidents.
So is everything okay in long-distance transportation? Not quite. Because with the second type of long-distance train, the Giruno from the Thurgau manufacturer Stadler Rail, not everything is going as it should. “In the first weeks after the 2019/20 time change, the new Giruno trains still did not meet SBB’s expectations in terms of reliability,” a spokesperson told CH Media.
“Teething problems”
Talk about “teething problems.” Some of these causes of malfunction could have been disabled. However, the shortcomings have not been fully resolved. It seems that there are always breakdowns. On the morning of September 14, a double set of two Giruno multiple units got stuck in the new Ceneri base tunnel.
What does Stadler say about the problems with the prestigious Gotthard train? The MDBI value was initially 3,000 kilometers and has remained at 6,000 kilometers since March 2020. But that is not enough for SBB. It requires a reliability target of 8,000 kilometers.
10,000 kilometers at the end of the year
Stadler is optimistic. “Along with other measures in vehicle technology, such as software, exterior doors, train protection, and in operation, such as training, hotline, infrastructure, a target value of the MDBI of 10,000 km is expected by the end of the year,” says a spokesperson for CH Media.
