Too few patients: the new Spital Appenzell construction project has been canceled
So there is no new building for Appenzell Hospital after all – the location in Appenzell Innerrhoden draws a mixed balance and as a result abandons the new building project. This is communicated by the professional ethics committee in a press conference.

(pd / mlb) The new Appenzell hospital construction project is halted. Members of the professional ethics committee will report on this at a press conference on Friday morning. This conclusion was reached “after a detailed assessment of the situation”. The reason for this decision is the number of patients who, contrary to expectations, have not increased in recent years.
In Landsgemeinde 2018, voters approved a loan for the new AVZ + hospital building in the amount of CHF 41 million. According to the profit and loss account envisaged at the time, it was assumed that, following a positive decision by Landsgemeinde, the number of cases at Appenzell Hospital would increase and business development would rebound. That was not the case. The hospital should have become competitive and sustainable thanks to the creation of new structural infrastructures. This will not happen at the moment.
