Tom Lüthi (34) already suspected this after the last driving tests on the same route. “Patience is still needed,” says the Swiss Moto2 rider this week about working with his new SAG team on the motorcycle vote (see video above).
So, Lüthi in Qatar is also still in the first free practice for the season opener on Sunday (5:20 pm, ServusTV live and srf.ch/sport). Only in 23rd place, 1.335 seconds behind Marco Bezzecchi’s (It) best time. A setback.
In the second training session under the floodlights, Lüthi improved to 13th place. The gap with the fastest time of Sam Lowes (Gb) is still pronounced at 0.850 seconds.
Concern for the Emmentaler: his new teammate Bo Bendsneyder (22) is always faster on the first day of training in Qatar, as in all test drives.
The highlights of Switzerland in Moto3
Jason Dupasquier (19) causes an explosion in the small Moto3 class. The Freiburg showcases the advances it made in winter at the GP circus. Dupasquier turns out to be one of the top ten drivers on the first day. In the first training there is a rank 7; in the second, the teenager even runs up to fifth place! He’s just 0.099 seconds off Kaita Toba’s (Jap) best time.
The youngster may well score World Cup points for the first time in his career on Sunday. In his debut year at the 2020 World Cup, he had no points all season.
As is known, the superstar Marc Márquez is not in the premier class of MotoGP, who missed the start because his arm was operated on three times. In the first practice session, Franco Morbidelli set the fastest time, his new partner at Petronas-Yamaha, the icon Valentino Rossi, finished in ninth position and world champion Joan Mir reached fifth place.
