Tom Lüthi changes to the Spanish SAG Moto2 team

This Friday morning, SPEEDWEEK.com exclusively announced that the Liqui-Moly-IntactGP team and Tom Lüthi will part ways after two years. Now it is clear why the Lüthi coach, Daniel Epp, arrived yesterday at the paddock of the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona. He reached an agreement with the owner of the Stop-and-Go (SAG) team, Eduardo Perales, and transferred the Swiss to the Spanish racing team, where three German-speaking Moto2 riders already had contracts with Jonas Folger, Marcel Schrötter and Jesko Raffin. Lüthi’s place in Intact is held by 20-year-old Moto3 rider and two-time GP winner Tony Arbolino.

On September 9, Tom Lüthi announced in an interview with SPEEDWEK.com that he was planning another season with Intact. Since Corona’s lockdown on the Memmingen racing team, Tom Lüthi and his manager Dani Epp have given a verbal confirmation for 2021. “Nothing is in writing yet,” Lüthi said three weeks ago. “During the Corona period, we agreed that we would continue like this. But the details have yet to be agreed. We have to focus on the next races. We have to take a step forward. We took the first step at Spielberg. That, of course, is motivating. Our goal is to do even better and get even closer to the podium. “

When asked if there could still be a surprise and a transfer to another team despite verbal acceptance, Lüthi replied: “That is not a problem at the moment.”

But now, the 2016 and 2017 Moto2 runner-up is taking SAG’s place from Remy Gardner, who goes to Red Bull-KTM-Ajo and replaces Jorge Martin.

Before the first GP in Misano, Lüthi stated: “You always have to work cooperatively, trust the team. And of course: the more you work together, the better you get to know each other. This is definitely how I see it. That’s why I didn’t change team leaders, teams and brands that often. “

The SAG team participated in the 250 World Championship and has been part of the Moto2 World Championship since 2010. Team owner Perales experienced the lowest point of his career when Luis Salom died at the Catalan GP in 2016 .

The SAG team is now called Onexox TKKR SAG Team, it is not exactly one of the financially stronger teams in the paddock and mainly hires paid drivers, for example, and Malaysian Daniel Kasma, Gardner’s teammate. By the start of the 2020 season, SAG was the only team that couldn’t afford the 2020 Kalex machines.

Therefore, the current ninth World Championship, Tom Lüthi, has to bring his own sponsors, as with MarcVDS in the 2018 MotoGP World Championship.
