A lot has to happen for Timo Glock to falter in motorsports. To catch the DTM star on the wrong foot. To surprise.
Audi did it. On Tuesday, 24 hours after the announced departure from Ingolstadt, Glock was still on Sat.1 Facebook Live with Eddie Mielke and Timo Scheider.
It shook me. I really wasn’t expecting it, it made a huge difference to me. It also shook the way that motorsport continues in general, ”said Glock.
“The DTM has always been a survivor who has taken his head out of the circle. But that’s a long-range, tragic decision, “says Scheider:” I hope that it will somehow continue. But really, I’m missing the facts.
Audi announced on Monday that it wanted to realign its motorsport activities. In the future, the focus will be on Formula E and customer sport.
And clearly: the crown crisis with its economic consequences also played an important role in the decision. The DTM is once again facing an uncertain future, with the question: what if only one manufacturer (BMW) is on board beyond 2020? “It hurts to have to accept the fact that the corona virus puts platforms and sports in a difficult situation and you don’t know how to proceed,” Glock said.
Glock and Scheider also advocate not seeing everything negative, but also seeing the crisis as an opportunity.
“Where one door closes, another opens. We must act now, but perhaps not quickly, but effectively, “says Scheider.
“Maybe this will clean up a few things and offer new opportunities,” says Glock, who calls for a return, which encourages not only questioning costs in the wake of the crisis, but also the concept.
You have to go back to basics, to the roots, says Glock: “Fans need to be able to identify more with cars. But that is a long way, there are many construction sites ahead. But you have to see it positively and the possibilities of repositioning, cleaning and simplifying things ».
Despite the departure, the 2020 season would continue to take place with Audi if the corona virus allows. The only alternative at the moment seems to be a closed ghost race.
Clear tenor: much better than any race.
“A race weekend with fans seems impossible, but it would be nice if we could say goodbye with an absolute highlight. I want nothing more than to run, “said Glock. Scheider emphasized: “It must be our greatest desire to do this. Better than not showing them at all. Otherwise, that would be a dramatic ending to a story that won’t be rewritten that quickly.
