- Microsoft has failed in its attempt to take over the US business of the Chinese video app Tiktok.
- The offer had been rejected by Tiktok’s Chinese owner Bytedance, Microsoft announced Monday night.
Before that, China had put obstacles in the way of a sale: according to the new rules of the end of August, among other things, “IT technologies with personalization based on data analysis” can only be sold abroad with permission of the government. Tiktok software is included in this description.
The sales talks had become necessary after the actions of US President Donald Trump against Tiktok and Bytedance. Trump describes Tiktok as a security risk because Chinese authorities could gain access to US data through the app.
Tiktok banned in the US since mid-September?
In early August, it banned US citizens and companies from doing business with Tiktok; This ban will take effect in mid-September. Without a deal, Tiktok threatens to end up in the United States. Trump stressed a few days ago that the deadline would not be extended.
Another Trump decree will also go into effect in mid-November, according to which Bytedance must separate itself from all user data in the United States. Bytedance also cannot have properties in the US that are used for the operation of Tiktok. Tiktok rejects the allegations, emphasizing, among other things, that US user data would not be transmitted to China.
Microsoft has been negotiating for weeks to take over the Tiktok business in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
