The main business representatives support the Federal Council, but there are also reproaches for “flying blind.”
You have to seek harsh criticism from business associations for a long time. Skepticism in business circles against the federal government’s more stringent protections has largely disappeared. For example, Monika Rühl, director of the umbrella economic organization Economiesuisse, says: “Today’s measures are inevitable and we support the Federal Council in them.”
The measures are tough and painful for various industries, Rühl added. “But there is no other way.” Because the situation in hospitals is simply too tense. Rühl still doesn’t want to know anything about a second full shutdown, like last spring.
The employers’ association welcomes the measures
It sounds similar with Valentin Vogt. The president of the Swiss Employers Association said this week: The Federal Council should wait and see first whether the existing restrictions would be sufficient.
When I look at today’s result, the Federal Council has made a compromise in good Switzerland.
But now Vogt says: “We consider these resolutions to be appropriate and proportionate and we welcome the fact that the Federal Council has not extended the measures to other sectors of the economy. In the middle of the week it still looked like it. “
By this, Vogt means that stores will remain open, including those that don’t sell essentials. “When I look at today’s result, the Federal Council has made a compromise in good Switzerland.”
Gastrosuisse shows understanding
The change of mind in the Gastrosuisse industry association is even clearer. Until now, he has always protested loudly and vehemently against the adjustment. But now director Daniel Borner says: “We have a great understanding of the situation and that these measures are being taken now. But the Federal Council has let us down. “
It is true that the authorities have opted for extensive aid in recent weeks and months and have made significant sums of money available. But: “From our point of view, currently it is not the money that is decisive that is talked about, but the money that flows. The situation here has barely changed since last week. “
We have great knowledge of the situation and that these measures are being taken now. But the Federal Council has let us down.
The cantons are particularly affected here: they are responsible for ensuring that the money for difficult cases can actually be paid. But in many places the legal basis for such payments is still lacking.
Gastrosuisse is no longer resisting restaurant closures, but is now concentrating on getting relief money for member companies quickly enough. Because many are now struggling to survive.
Criticisms of the “blind flight” by the Federal Council
Only the Swiss Trade Association dances out of place. Director Hans-Ulrich Bigler is relieved that normal shops can remain open. However, with a view to the closure of restaurants and fitness and sports centers, he says: “This is action that flies blind. You don’t know where the infection occurred, and the costs are huge. “
The trade association remains in its previous position. In the case of many other business representatives, the soaring number of infections, combined with urgent appeals from numerous hospitals in recent days, has evidently caused a change in mood.
