Kemal Ademi, Fabian Frei and Arthur Cabral were the scorers in FC Lugano’s last defeat in Cornaredo. That was almost a year ago, on November 10, 2019, when FC Basel was able to triumph at Ticino’s home. Since then, Cornaredo has become a true strength, as FC St. Gallen also learned on Saturday night.
Lugano’s Numa Lavanchy scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute. After a great job from Adria Guerrero, it was Jonathan Sabbatini who brought the ball to the center. Lavanchy was right and headed to make it 1-0.
Ticino stronghold stops St. Gallen offensive
St. Gallen, who already had more game before conceding, could not get off the ground and always presented good opportunities:
- 27. Minute: Lukas Görtler is coming from a promising position to head, but Lugano goalkeeper Noam Baumann directs the attempt around the post.
- 82. Minute: Görtler creates danger again, but his deflected shot lands on the post.
- 91. Minute: St. Gallen can try his luck three times in the opposite penalty area, but Baumann and Lavanchy save by their colors.
Therefore, Zeidler-Elf has to endure the accusation of undervaluing opportunities despite significantly more games being shared. It is also the first loss of the season for eastern Switzerland.
Lugano, on the other hand, won the 3 points thanks to a dedicated defensive work. But not much was possible on offense: Ticino did not shoot at the opposing goal in the second half.
Lugano reaches the top
Thanks to the victory, Maurizio Jacobacci’s team is temporarily in second place in the table. The gap with Leader St. Gallen is only one point. In a week YB has to go to Cornaredo, St. Gallen receives Basel.
