At Bätterkinden BE, Fenaco has put into operation a unique robot in Europe to pack potatoes. At the potato packing plant, about 9.5 million bags of potatoes are processed each year and made available for retail delivery. The job is physically demanding: employees lift several tons of potatoes to a height of two meters every day.
That’s the end of it: a robot takes over some of the hard work. “We have been looking for some relief for our employees for a long time,” says Klaus Meier, site manager for Bätterkinden. “When filling the container, the potato sacks must not be damaged, at the same time, the bags must not protrude from the container. It is challenging to automate this process. Because potatoes are a natural product. “
32 sensors configure it
The robot was developed in close cooperation with Twin Automation, Emmental’s mechanical engineering company. Its heart is the multifunctional container clamp. “It is equipped with 32 sensors with which all functions are controlled,” explains Daniel Studer, CTO of Twin Automation. You can also turn the potato sacks over, weigh the Härdöpfel; it also has a lifting platform.
The employees will be happy. As in other areas of agriculture, machines work hand in hand with employees. And free them from the most physically demanding job. (pbe)
