In the canton of Zurich, 28 new deaths related to the corona virus were reported on Monday. In addition, 326 new corona infections were recorded. 1,085 positive tests were reported over the weekend.
Until yesterday, 400 people throughout the canton were receiving hospital treatment for Covid-19. 68 of them in intensive care. Intensive care beds in the canton are currently 75 percent occupied. Zurich University Hospital is particularly popular. Almost all of the 64 intensive care beds are occupied there, more than a third of them are Covid patients.
Personnel transferred to the intensive care unit
The hospital’s director general, Gregor Zünd, said at a press event Tuesday morning that 25 Covid patients were currently being treated in the intensive care unit of the University Hospital. There are currently 63 in the normal room.
The situation is stable thanks to the reduction of non-critical operations over time. The number of so-called electoral interventions has already been reduced by around 15 percent. Staff in disused operating rooms help out in intensive care units. If necessary, the number of elections will be further reduced.
Currently only three free Covid beds
Peter Steiger, deputy director of the Institute of Intensive Care Medicine, announced more details about the situation in the intensive care unit. Currently, only three Covid beds and one non-Covid bed are free. “We are always a little tight,” Steiger said. Also, the staff is understaffed than when the last information was 14 days ago.
In total, the university hospital treated 100 corona patients in the intensive care unit during the second wave. That was more than in spring. However, these stayed for less time, Steiger said. (noo)
