This is how the elephant died at the Zurich zoo

The elephant calf, who was kicked to death by the herd at the Zurich Zoo in August after giving birth, was evidently very weak and barely moving. The pack tried to encourage him to get up and fatally wounded him. This was the result of the death analysis.

In addition to the pathological examinations, the Zurich Zoo evaluated the video recordings of the birth with the help of outside zoologists and elephant experts from the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP), as announced on Monday.

Herd members’ reaction to calving was normal for the first few minutes. They encouraged the newborn to get up with head, trunk and feet. It seems tough, but it is part of the birth of an elephant. Increasingly fierce efforts to help the calf to its feet eventually led to the death of the animal.

The fact that the bull was so weak was possibly a consequence of the time it took to give birth. Pathological examinations revealed no abnormalities. The behavior of the herd members was not aggressive. (aeg / sda)
