The robot developed by the Swiss company Uveya was presented to the media on Monday. The machine beeps and bathes the aircraft cabin in bright bluish light. According to the manufacturer, UV-C light kills 99 percent of all viruses and bacteria in the air and on surfaces. This also applies to coronaviruses.
The machine, which costs around 15,000 francs, could be used in addition to other cleaning and disinfection measures. Until then, according to Uveya, some questions remain to be clarified, such as whether aircraft cabin materials can withstand UV-C rays in the long term or whether, for example, there is discoloration.
It is also used in laboratories.
The disinfection robot is currently being tested on Helvetic Airways machines in conjunction with the Dnata ground handler. Disinfection with the aid of UV-C light is a technology that has been known for a long time and is used in laboratories, for example.
This method is also used for escalator handrails. Zurich airport is already cleaning its handrails in this way.
Not used in Switzerland
Swiss airline is not currently using UV-C robots for cabin disinfection, as a spokeswoman said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. But watch the market development and new technologies in this area.
After each arrival in Zurich and Geneva, Swiss aircraft are thoroughly cleaned with a special cleaning agent with a disinfecting effect. At destination airports, cleaning is done in accordance with local regulations and options. (pbe / SDA)
