Switzerland is suffering more from the consequences of the Crown crisis than expected. This also has an impact on Switzerland’s winter flight program, which was unveiled today. “Due to the global development of the pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions and quarantine regulations in place of effective corona test procedures, our planned flight program for next winter does not meet our original expectations,” says the manager of Swiss sales Tamur Goudarzi Pour.
While a flight schedule of up to 50 percent was planned until a few weeks ago, the Lufthansa subsidiary now had to cut it down to around 30 to a high of 40 percent from the previous year, taking developments into account. Overall, Swiss wants to fly to 85 percent of its destinations again in winter, 67 of them from Zurich and 21 from Geneva.
Back to Marrakech
In the long-haul segment, Swiss will fly to Boston (USA) again in October. The city on the coast of the United States will initially receive services twice a week and from March three times a week. Johannesburg is also receiving services again, with three flights per week planned. Additionally, from the end of October, Swiss will operate the Zurich-Dubai route three times a week; in the medium term, Dubai will connect from Zurich at least five times a week.
Despite all the uncertainties, the Lufthansa subsidiary plans to resume the following destinations with the short-haul winter flight plan from Zurich: Munich and Wroclaw (Poland) at the end of October, Luxembourg, Birmingham, London City and Nuremberg in February 2021 and Graz in March 2021. During the Christmas season, when there is usually a high number of visitors, Palma de Mallorca, Bilbao, Sylt, Naples and Thessaloniki are also served.
From Geneva, Swiss will fly directly to Pristina again in early October and to Marrakech in mid-October. Prague will join them in late October and Moscow in early November. From mid-December, Swiss will once again serve the following destinations: Malaga, Valencia, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Dublin, Hurghada, Kittilä (Finland), Saint Petersburg and London Gatwick. Starting in February 2021, the airline will also fly direct from Geneva to the City of London again. The destinations with the most flights from Geneva in winter include London Heathrow, Frankfurt and Moscow.
Edelweiss promises dream destinations
As if Corona is over: Edelweiss offers destinations to the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean in the fall and winter flight times. Maldives, Seychelles, Cancun and Punta Cana are part of the program.
If you don’t want to go that far, you can travel to Egypt and Turkey with one of the 16 Edelweiss machines. The airline also promises direct flights from Zurich to Muscat in Oman.
But it is not so simple after all. Cancellations are still a reality on all routes. Edelweiss protects herself and prefers not to promise too much. “The current situation is continuously monitored and the route network adapts to the situation,” said a press release from the airline.
