While Dominic Thiem defeats Russian Daniil Medvedev in three sets, Alexander Zverev has to overcome all five sets. For Zverev, it is the first end of his career.
For Sunday’s final (game start at 10:15 pm) this means: Dominic Thiem Advantage. The 27-year-old from Wiener Neustadt is in a Grand Slam final for the fourth time. He lost the top three to Rafael Nadal (twice at Roland-Garros) and most recently in January at the Australian Open against Novak Djokovic.
Alexander “Sascha” Zverev, on the other hand, is in the final of a major tournament for the first time. So far there have been nine direct duels between friends Thiem and Zverev. The Austrian won seven (and the last three) duels. Dominic Thiem also won the first three Grand Slam tournament matches, most recently in the 2020 Australian Open semi-finals with 3: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6, 7: 6.
Medvedev awards several set balls
Russian Daniil Medvedev himself buried the great opportunity for the first major title on the day of the semi-finals. In the second high-class semifinal, the Muscovite did not take advantage of his opportunities. Medvedev only clearly lost the first set (2: 6). In sets two and three, the Russian had the advantage for a long time. In the second set, Medvedev led 5: 3 and 30: 0. In the tiebreaker he won a set ball with a score of 6: 5.
In the third set, Medvedev even led 3-0, 4-1 and 5-2. When the score was 5: 4 and his own serve, he again conceded a set ball. In the recent tie-break, Medvedev made a false start (1: 5); Dominic Thiem used his second match point after 2:56 hours.
Medvedev failed again at Flushing Meadows in dramatic fashion, though not nearly as crazy as a year ago in the final against Rafael Nadal, when he regained a 2-0 deficit in the final and only gave up after five exciting sets. Before the semi-final against Thiem, Medvedev was the only one at the US Open who had yet to give up a set.
Zverev defeats Carreño Busta ill
Meanwhile, Medvedev failed due to an outstanding opponent, Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta was not only stopped by opponent Alexander Zverev, but also due to back problems. Carreño Busta won the first two sets against Zverev 6: 3, 6: 2, and the German only won four of these five games after the sets (at 1: 5 and 0: 5) had already been run.
But Zverev increased significantly after the first two sets, benefiting from the fact that the opponent’s back began to pinch. The Spanish could only get very little from the fourth set. In particular, Carreño Busta pushed the second serve to the field without a shot. Carreño Busta received back treatment. But Zverev put the seal on the ailing opponent in the last three sets until 3: 6, 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 3.
Pablo Carreño Busta failed for the second time in the US Open semifinals after 2017. Three years ago he was defeated in three sets by South African Kevin Anderson, who in turn had no chance in the final against Nadal as the lowest ranked US finalist. Open of the professional era (number 32 in the world). “The recent loss in the semifinals is a much bigger disappointment,” said Carreño Busta, because “this time, of course, there was a much better chance of winning the title in New York.”
Carreño Busta wants to use his strong form and despite all efforts, he wants to start next week in Rome on clay. It leaves New York on Saturday and flies directly to Italy, where it arrives on Sunday morning. In Rome, you have to be quarantined in a hotel room for 24 hours. To receive the license to play, Carreño Bosta has to re-submit a negative corona test in Italy.
