Several new traffic regulations will go into effect on January 1, 2021. The Federal Highway Office (Astra) hopes this will increase safety and make traffic flow smoothly. The main changes:
New rules for cars, motorcycles, trucks.
Lots of new things to learn: Zipper to remove the rail(01:01)
Rack for elimination of lanes and motorway accesses: When the rails are shortened, the rack system is now mandatory. This applies where the lanes end: for example, when changing from three to two lanes, in an accident or on a construction site. Drive in both lanes until the lanes are cleared. There, each road user in the next lane allows a road user to pass in front of him from the dismantled lane using the principle of zipper closure. Motorists have to let vehicles enter from the eliminated lane. However, drivers of inward turning vehicles cannot force space; The zipper system now also applies to slow traffic when entering the highway. Failure to comply with the zipper principle will be penalized with a fine.
Rescue lane: An emergency lane must now be cleared for emergency vehicles on highways, even when traffic is only moving at a pace. This also applies if no blue light vehicle can be seen or heard. On two-lane roads, the salvage lane must be formed between the two lanes; on three-lane highways, always between the far left and middle lanes.
Swipe right: The right-hand drive law still applies on highways. However, if a column has formed in the left lane (or in the case of three-lane highways in the left and / or middle lane), road users can pass in the right lane, even if they have not yet a column has formed in the right lane.
100 km / h for light tow trains: Anyone towing a trailer with a car or delivery van can now drive at a maximum speed of 100 km / h on highways. The trailer must not weigh more than 3.5 tons and must be suitable for this speed.
New rules for bicycles and mopeds
Turn right on red for bikes and mopeds: “Red is red!” This principle still applies. The novelty is that cyclists and mopeds can turn right at the red traffic light, as long as it is indicated by a sign with a yellow bicycle and an arrow. If there is no signal at a traffic light, red also applies to bicycles and mopeds. Pedestrians still have the right of way.
Elementary school children with bicycles on the sidewalk: Children 12 and under can now use the sidewalk with their bike. However, only if there is no bike lane or cycle lane. Pedestrians keep their right of way.
Much to learn new: Bicycle lanes in 30 zones(00:55)
Bicycle roads: New bike lanes can be installed in 30 km / h zones. Vehicles on bicycle lanes have preference over the roads that flow towards them, that is, the right of way previously applicable in 30 km / h zones does not apply on bicycle roads. Consequently, “Stop” or “No right of way” is indicated on the roads leading to it. Yellow bicycle pictograms on the ground can mark a cycle route, but it is not required.
Stationary traffic
Charging station: The “charging station” symbol will be created for stopped traffic. This can be used to designate parking areas that have a charging station for electric vehicles.
Also apply from 2021 new regulations for driving licenses:
Learning trips from 17 years old: Anyone who acquires the Passenger Car Apprenticeship License on or after January 1, 2021 before the age of 20 must complete a twelve-month learning phase. In order for the driving test to be completed at the age of 18 despite the one-year learning phase, the learner’s license can be issued at the age of 17.
For motorcyclists no more direct entry into category A without restrictions: If you want to ride the most powerful motorcycles, you will first need to drive a category A motorcycle limited to 35 kW for at least two years. In the future, direct entry into the strongest motorcycle categories will only be possible for people who are professionally dependent on riding such motorcycles: motorcycle mechanics, police officers and traffic experts.
