All participants in road traffic will be affected by the new traffic regulations. The changes will take effect on January 1, 2021. Some of the innovations that are aimed at optimizing traffic safety and traffic flow were initiated and supported by TCS. The most important changes from 2021 at a glance:
Emergency lanes on the highway
To further facilitate the passage of vehicles with blue lights, drivers will need to create an emergency lane without being prompted in the event of a traffic jam or slow traffic. This should clear the way in the middle of the road, it is not allowed to use the shoulder.
If you are in a tunnel, the vehicle should get as close to the edge of the road as possible. If a freeway has three lanes, those in the center lane must swerve to the right. Those in the left lane should keep to the left.
Important: In such cases, turn on the hazard lights well in advance to avoid further accidents.
The principle of the zipper
This principle is used when two lanes merge on the highway. Drivers only have to turn their car at the end of the dismantling lane to avoid an early lane change and thus delays as well.
Pass right
Starting in 2021, you will also be allowed to go through motorway convoys on three-lane highways, overtaking on the right and re-entering will continue to be prohibited. This approach contributes to the liquefaction of traffic.
New 100 km / h allowed for caravans
The maximum speed allowed for teams with trailers or caravans (up to 3.5 tons) has now been increased to 100 km / h. The maximum weight of the trailer load must not be exceeded and the tires must be suitable for the speed.
Alcohol can be re-served at rest stops.
The law that prohibited the service of alcoholic beverages in highway service stations was repealed by the Federal Council in the National Highway Ordinance.
Turning on the red lights
Bicyclists and motorcycles may turn right at a red light in city traffic, if they are marked accordingly. However, this is not a general permission to turn right.
Children up to 12 years old can ride their bikes on the sidewalk.
Children up to 12 years old can ride their bikes on the sidewalk. But only if there is no bike path. However, they must yield to pedestrians and the sidewalk must circulate within the path.
Learn to drive from the age of 17
The learning license for passenger cars (cat. B and BE) can be requested from the age of 17. You can register for the practical test from the age of 18 on the condition that you have been accompanied for one year.
One-year learning driving obligation
Only drivers who have reached the age of 20 can take the test as beginning drivers with less than 12 months of driving experience. Those who were born between 2001 and 2003 and receive their learner’s license before December 31, 2021 are exempt from this.
Parking without your hands on the wheel
The parking aids can be used without holding the steering wheel. If a parking assist system is used, the steering wheel can be released or, if the parking assist allows it, the driver can get out of the car. But you have to be prepared to intervene if the worst happens.
Green parking spaces for electric vehicles only
Green markings and the new “charging station” symbol indicate that these parking spaces can only be occupied by electric vehicles. In this way, drivers can quickly identify locations equipped with a charging station.
Changes in the parking disc signal
At the request of law enforcement authorities, new signs will be introduced to remind people to use the parking disc.
