The Swiss economy has had a difficult year due to the Crown crisis. Tens of thousands of employees have lost their jobs or worked short-time for months. And yet, amid the pandemic, the largest Swiss employers increased the number of jobs. This is the result of a survey conducted by “SonntagsZeitung”.
The largest generator of employment was the retailer Coop with 1,000 new jobs. Fenaco (Volg, Landi), Lidl, Aldi, Migros, Otto’s and Spar have also expanded, practically all retail. Pharmaceutical and chemical supplier Lonza created 500 new jobs at Visp VS. Not least in relation to the Corona de Moderna vaccine, which will one day be produced in Valais.
Manor has cut 1,200 jobs
But many jobs were also lost. The Manor department store chain stands out as the largest layoff company. Cut 1200 places. Swisscom cut another 500 jobs. Hundreds of jobs were also lost in the aviation industry, which was particularly affected by the Corona crisis.
However, the bottom line was that more companies created jobs than eliminated them. Even better: the work miracle should continue into the new year. Twenty of the ninety large employers surveyed by the “SonntagsZeitung” want to increase the number of their jobs, only nine are facing job cuts, the rest expect a stable number of jobs.
Will continue positively in 2021
The biggest job creators in 2021 will be Swiss Post, which aims to create several hundred new jobs in the coming years, Lonza, which will create another 500 jobs in Visp VS and retail. Only Migros is announcing the creation of several hundred new jobs, Fenaco is planning between 200 and 300 new jobs. Another 200 jobs will be added at Lidl. Aldi also has similar plans. (pbe)
