It should already be floating in the heads of some soccer fans. The anthem of the Champions League. Finally she is back. Two months after the final in Lisbon, the premier class begins the new season. Already this week we can expect delights such as PSG against Manchester United, Lazio against Dortmund or Bayern against Atlético.
Despite the anticipation, the Champions League begins with many questions due to the crown pandemic. UEFA has introduced special rules so that European tournaments can take place. And they have it all!
With or without fans?
A maximum of 30 percent of the stadium capacity can be used, provided that national or local health authorities allow it. Visiting fans cannot enter. The minimum distance in the stands must be respected, the mask requirement applies.
In Spain, the government banned fans from stadiums until the end of the year. Spectators are also not allowed in the arenas in England. In Italy, a maximum of 1000 people are allowed to enter. In Germany, a 20 percent utilization would be allowed, but Corona is so furious in Bavaria, for example, that Wednesday’s game against Atlético will also be played without fans.
However, between Dynamo Kiev and Juventus Turin, up to 21,000 spectators are expected in Ukraine.
Uefa under time pressure
The European Football Association wants to have played all the matches of the group stage before 9 December. If the games must be postponed due to the corona pandemic, they must be recovered by January 28, 2021 at the latest. Time is running out …
Local club in charge
UEFA takes the duty of clubs that have home rights. So if a local club or national authority imposes restrictions that apply to the visiting club, then the host must ensure that the game can still be played. For example, you can use an alternative location or date. If the game cannot take place, the local club loses 0: 3 ski pass.
13 players needed
If there are at least 12 outfield players and a goalkeeper available, the game must be played. If this is not the case, Uefa may allow the game to be reprogrammed. Exceptionally, players who were not originally on the clubs’ Champions League roster can also be re-nominated.
If it does not work with a rescheduling and the game can no longer be played in time for January 28, 2021, the club in question loses 3-0 forfait.
The association has already shown that UEFA can take tough measures. For example, at the end of August: at that time, Slovan Bratislava could not play Klaksvik in the Faroe Islands. Slovaks have too many crown cases to complain about on the original and replacement dates. Without further ado, UEFA knocks Slovan Bratislava out of the Champions League qualifier, Klaksvik goes one round without a fight (at BLICK).
New referee rule
If the referee is absent on short notice due to Corona, the association may exceptionally provide a replacement referee from the same country as one of the clubs involved. The referee doesn’t even have to be on the FIFA list.
Starting today, the premier category will be kicked. But if the 96-game schedule can really be accomplished in about two months, it’s in the stars. Tough measures may well come into play. (mam)
