Most of the Basel Carnival in February 2021 will not take place. However, the Carnival Committee, together with the cantonal authorities, is looking for ways in which at least the young cliques can act.

The Fasnachts Committee has abandoned the search for crown-friendly alternatives to the traditional Basel Carnival from February 22 to 25. The idea of moving the carnival from the city center to the districts was canceled by the second wave of pandemics and the protective measures that were made necessary, the Committee announced on Thursday together with the Presidential Department of Basel.

Carnival ban – activities for the youngest

It is not expected that the epidemiological development will allow an adequate relaxation of the measures until February. It will definitely not be possible to make free music and “alleys” in the city.

Unlike 2020, the cancellation in 2021 is not a blanket carnival ban. Therefore, the Fasnachts-Committee is examining the framework conditions to allow at least young cliques to participate in carnival activities. During school holidays, for example, there should be a carnival walk with various locations in the city, in which various elements of a clique year should be displayed.
