There are 78,832 vacant apartments in Switzerland

As of June 1, 2020, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) accounted for 78,832 vacant apartments in Switzerland. This corresponds to 1.72 percent of the total housing stock (including single-family homes).

Compared to the previous year, 3,449 more apartments were vacant. An increase of 4.6 percent, as can be seen in the vacancy count released by the FSO on Monday.

Ticino with the highest rise

According to the FSO, the number of vacant apartments offered on the market on June 1, 2020 increased in five of the top seven regions. The Greater Ticino region registered the highest increase (+0.42 percentage points), followed by the Lake Geneva region (+0.21 percentage points). Compared to the previous year, the vacancy rate only decreased in the main regions of eastern Switzerland (-0.08 percentage points) and Espace Mittelland (-0.02 percentage points).

In general, the highest vacancy rates were recorded in the cantons of Solothurn, Ticino, Aargau and Jura. In the canton of Solothurn, according to the FSO figures, as in June 2019, most of the apartments in Switzerland are vacant at 3.22%. The lowest rate was recorded in the canton of Geneva (0.49%).

Higher vacancy rates for small apartments

Compared to June 1, 2019, the number of vacant apartments also increased in all apartment categories, as measured by the number of bedrooms. According to the BFS, 5-bedroom apartments are excluded from this. Here the supply of vacant apartments fell by 0.5 percent. On the other hand, the supply of one and two-bedroom apartments is the one that has expanded the most (+ 14.5% and + 7.0%, respectively).
