In its latest epidemiological situation report, the Covid-19 scientific working group notes that the disease is still spreading exponentially. Based on confirmed cases, the number of reproductions is 1.05 in all major regions, well above the target value of 0.8.

The value calculated based on deaths (1.01) and hospitalizations (0.94) is also above the value proposed by the working group. A breeding number of 0.8 would cut the number of new infections in half in two weeks.

The accumulated number of cases during the last two weeks showed strong regional and cantonal fluctuations. The number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants ranged from 364 (Obwalden) to 982 (St. Gallen). While individual cantons or regions managed to slow the epidemic slightly, most show an upward trend.

The test’s positivity rate is also well above the 5 percent threshold recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), he said.

No relaxation

The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units (464 to 482) and daily deaths (60 to 91) remained stable at a high level over the past two weeks. Over the past seven weeks, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) has recorded excess mortality among those over 65 in Switzerland, with the exception of the Lake Geneva region.

According to the report, the working group does not see any relaxation in the situation: on the one hand, it can be assumed that mobility and contacts will increase during the Christmas holidays and with the start of the winter sports season. On the other hand, there is a risk that the variant of the virus mutated in Great Britain, which according to current knowledge is more contagious than the known form, will also spread in Switzerland in the near future.
