The Swiss women’s team will play the penultimate match of the qualifying round for the European Championship on Tuesday.
With a win in Romania on Tuesday, the SFV squad could take a big step closer to direct qualification for EM 2022 in England. If the Swiss win the second leg after 6-0 in the first leg, one point is enough for them to secure a group win at the end of qualifying on December 1 in Belgium.
The 3 best runners-up in the group also qualify directly for the final round, the other 6 dispute a tiebreaker for 3 more places. “We all know that if we get 3 points, it looks great,” says national coach Nils Nielsen.
Wälti has to defend again
On defense, however, he is plagued with injury concerns. In addition to long-lasting injuries, Rahel Kiwic and Viola Calligaris, Noelle Maritz and Luana Bühler will also be out of the game in Mogosoaia, a suburb of Bucharest. As in the 2-1 victory against Belgium in September, captain Lia Wälti will return to play as a central defender. The record scorer Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic of FC Barcelona would be an alternative for the defensive outer court.
