The vote for the “Swiss Car of the Year”, which took place for the tenth time this year and is carried out by “Schweizer Illustrierte” with partners BLICK, SonntagsBlick, AutoScout24, “L’illustré” and “il caffè”, has been firmly established. For the 2021 title, the 15-member jury of auto journalists, environmental experts, and racing drivers narrowed the list of new products to choose from from 47 to 13 finalists and put them to the test on test day.
The glamorous gala of the winners had to be canceled due to the Corona crisis. But the result is a real surprise: the winner is a brand that has only existed for about three years. The prestigious title of “Swiss Car of the Year” 2021 will be won by the Polestar 2 from Volvo’s sporty and noble subsidiary Polestar, which will only be launched in Switzerland this fall!
Victory by a clear margin
And the Polestar (German: “Polarstern”) does not win by a narrow margin over the established ones: with 23 percent of the votes, it lands in front of two other pure electric cars, the VW ID.3 with twelve and the Opel Corsa- e with ten percent. What is it? Confident in the skills of the developers behind the brand. The modern e-sedan with a bit of SUV flair was built in China by Volvo’s parent company Geely, but it was developed – clearly remarkable! – Volvo.
You can see that in details like the “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights to the Volvo, and you can feel it in the sleek and cool cabin, and especially when driving. The five-door sedan is a bit taller than usual, but at 4.61 meters in length, it points to the noble mid-range of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and, yes, Tesla’s Model 3 as well. . and electric-fast.
408 hp, 4×4, 470 kilometers
The two electric motors produce 408 hp (300 kW), allowing the four-wheel drive to hum to 100 (maximum 205 km / h) in 4.7 seconds. The standard range is 470 kilometers, which means that a minimum of 420 kilometers should be the rule in everyday life. If you charge the 78 kWh battery with 150 kilowatts, it will have 80 percent in again after 40 minutes.
The Polestar 2 is no space miracle, but the rear and the 405-1095-liter cargo space under the tailgate (plus the 35-liter compartment under the front hood) are similar to a sports sedan. Interior highlight: The first Google-based infotainment in a production car. Login to Google account, everything is there. It sounds expensive. But in view of the almost full standard equipment and power, 57,900 francs is fair in this league. Cheaper variants will follow.
