- With a roar, a large part of the famous white cliffs near Dover fell into the English Channel. The walkers captured the natural event in photos and videos.
- On social media, users mockingly emphasized that the show was a symbol of the situation in the UK.
“What a sense of humor, irony and opportunity nature has: the iconic Brexit-Britain cliffs tumble into the frozen sea,” wrote one user on Twitter.
The cliffs, which are easy to see when arriving by ferry, were formed about 90 million years ago. Its white color comes from its chalk composition, but it is particularly prone to erosion. That is why parts keep falling into the sea.
In the past 150 years, researchers have found that cliffs have eroded ten times faster than in the previous 7,000 years. According to the online portal “Kent Live”, this was only the third time in the last 20 years that such a large piece broke.
In addition to the already soft composition of the chalk, the reasons for erosion are the force of the waves breaking against the rocks, as well as storms and heavy precipitation.
