The mine operator has resumed operations around five years after the “Mariana tragedy” in Brazil. This was reported by the Brazilian news portal “G1”, quoting the mining company Samarco on Thursday. According to the report, Samarco is returning, initially limited, with 26 percent of the production capacity in the area with what was then “Barragem de Fundão”, the same dam that broke five years ago.
On November 5, 2015, a landslide destroyed the city of Bento Rodrigues and killed 19 people. The failure of the dam in the retention basin of an iron ore plant in the state of Minas Gerais caused the disaster. It is said that about 35 billion liters of waste flowed into the Doce River and contaminated the 650 kilometers to the Atlantic.
Brazilian prosecutors filed wrongful death charges against 21 prominent Samarco employees. According to “G1”, no one has been convicted since. According to the foundation, founded by Vale, BHP Billiton and Samarco, until October 2020, 10 billion reais, about 1.6 billion euros, were allocated to reconstruction projects. The Brazilian Samarco belongs to the Brazilian group Vale and the Australian-British group BHP Billiton. (sda / dpa)
