The tiger mosquito has spread further in the Basel region. This was announced Thursday by the Basel-Stadt health department and the Basel-Landschaft building and environmental protection department. The bloodsucker has settled both on the Rheinhafen and near the toll on the French motorway.
There is new evidence of a settlement in the Neubad district in the canton of Basel-City and in the Muttenz and Reinach communities in the Basel area. Therefore, the population is asked to actively participate in the fight against the tiger mosquito again this year and to avoid breeding in stagnant waters in gardens and terraces.
Disease transmitter
The tiger mosquito is very annoying, diurnal and it reproduces mainly in the settlement area. Its sting can cause severe skin reactions. The tiger mosquito is a potential carrier of pathogens. Overseas, cases of transmission of diseases such as Zika, Chikungunya or Dengue are known.
Disease transmission in Switzerland has not yet been documented. That is why the risk of transmission is now considered minimal.
However, additional breeding of the tiger mosquito should slow down. The authorities recommend the following:
- Avoid coasters and water containers in gardens and patios or empty them at least once a week.
- Cover rain barrels and store or rotate unused containers like watering cans, buckets, or toys under one roof so rainwater does not collect in them.
- Do not use insecticides at your own discretion.
According to the authorities, the tiger mosquito cannot spread in ponds and rivers.
Special means of struggle
If mosquitoes are found repeatedly, authorities take action at the sites, according to the press release. In the inevitable accumulations of water, they fight against the multiplication of the tiger mosquito with the help of a biological insecticide, which specifically only works against mosquitoes.
The specialized departments of the canton and the municipalities also use this biological insecticide in public spaces. For private rooms, it is delivered to individuals with an instruction sheet.
It’s about the mosquito
The tiger mosquito is also called the Asian tiger mosquito. It stands out for its black and white design. It was originally found in the Asian region, but has been distributed worldwide by freight and passenger transport in recent decades. The warmer climate helps it spread. The tiger mosquito has been in Ticino since 2003. There, however, the authorities managed to stop the spread by taking the measures that Basel took.
