The corona pandemic threw the 2020 Basel Carnival into the water. It will also be nothing like in 2021. However, the Committee wants to celebrate the carnival. To prevent large crowds and the spread of the virus, a new concept will be developed. It is not yet clear what this will look like: the Committee asks carnival participants to submit ideas.
This does not meet with everyone’s approval and active carnival enthusiasts are skeptical. A look at the comments from the Telebasel community underscores this skepticism. Many would have expected a solution from the Committee and are surprised that ideas are only now being sought. “Apparently they slept since March,” he writes about one user. “The Committee doesn’t really do a lot of work,” adds another user. But the idea was also approved. “I think it’s a good idea,” said another user.
“It will never be the same as before,” commented another user. Many agree with this sentiment: they are disappointed, angry and sad that at least Carnival 2021 is different than usual. “As long as we don’t fight, it will never be the same again,” adds another user.
Previous times as a role model?
Others put it in perspective: “The carnival will only take place in a different way,” comments one Facebook user. She remembers that there were changes in the past: “In the past, Carnival was divided into different neighborhoods and there was no Cortège, as we are used to”. This “distributed” carnival is also one of the possible ways of implementation. One user suggests holding various carnival events in the districts. “Then, of course, only the residents of this neighborhood are going to look, that solves the problem of crowds.” The Räppli can also be used to ensure that people disperse, he jokingly adds.
Many people laugh at the idea of a distributed carnival: “Quite a simple idea,” commented one user about the one-time idea of holding the Cortège alone in Schützenmattpark and the morning joke at Barfüsserplatz.

Trust in creativity
Another user suggests not making the carnival accessible to tourists. Therefore, the traditional event should be held as a secret event for Basel. “Traditionally. No tourists. And for the people of Basel who then go there, it just means: mandatory mask.”
Confident voices are also reporting from the uncertainty of the corona fog hanging over the carnival. “I only know one thing: the Basel Carnival is creative and adaptable,” writes one user.
