Despite Corona’s uncertainties, new companies are still being established in Switzerland. In September, the increase was two percentage digits both compared to the same month of the previous year and compared to August.
Confidence among the founders in Switzerland continues and a continued increase can be expected in 2020, according to a message from the Institute for Young Enterprises in the corresponding monthly survey.
18 percent more startups
After the number of startups dropped noticeably in March, April and May due to the crown’s protective measures, the numbers have risen in the double-digit percentage range since June compared to the previous year. In September, more than 18 percent more new companies were founded than in September 2019, specifically 3,777. In August, the increase was 17.9 percent, although at a slightly lower level.
The decline since the time of the lockdown has been more than offset in the following months, which were strong in startups. In total, more than 33,600 new businesses were launched in the first three quarters, representing an increase of 2.5 percent compared to the previous year’s record. The leader among the cantons is Zug with just under 14 startups per 1000 inhabitants.
Hairdressing salons in high demand
The institute also notes that the four most popular legal forms have seen an increase in new entries.
By sectors, the areas of hairdressing and cosmetics (+ 23.6%), marketing and communication (+ 17.6%) and training (+ 16.7%) showed the highest growth in nine months.
There were also double-digit growth rates for startups in consulting, architecture, and engineering. There was a decrease in the creation of companies in segments such as wholesale, finance and insurance, culture and the common good or “other services”. (pbe / SDA)
