Mattea Meyer (32) and Cédric Wermuth (34) had imagined that the election to the top of the SP would be more solemn. Due to numerous corona infections, the SP party leadership decided on Thursday to move the party conference in Basel to digital channels.
Therefore, there will be no big standing ovations today when SP President Christian Levrat (50) hands over the scepter to the Zurich National Councilor and the Aargau National Council after twelve years in office. It is considered the choice of the duo, who know each other very well since their Juso era. The only opposition candidate, Martin Schwab (25), is a simple member of the SP without any political position or network.
Vice presidential race
On the other hand, the five-person vice presidential race should be even more interesting. In addition to the two previous Vice-Presidents Barbara Gysi (56, SG) and Ada Marra (47, VD), the two National Councilors of Zurich Jacqueline Badran (58) and Angelo Barrile (44), the Romans Samuel Bendahan (40) and Martine Docourt (41), Bünder Jon Pult (36), Bruno Storni (66) from Ticino and Juso president Ronja Jansen (25) offer seven comrades for the election.
The air is particularly thin for Juso president Jansen. Because the Juso has always been represented in the Presidium of the SP in recent years, but unlike, for example, in the leadership of the SP or in the assembly of delegates, the seat is not provided for in the statutes. And while Wermuth’s successors atop Juso, David Roth (35), Fabián Molina (30) and Tamara Funiciello (30), were chosen with virtually no discussion, Jansen now faces serious competition.
Fixed Juso seat?
To avoid Juso’s expulsion, SP National Councilor Priska Seiler Graf (52), who withdrew her candidacy for the SP Presidium in the summer, rushes to the rescue. In a motion to the party congress, the Zurich National Councilor asks that the Presidium of the SP be expanded by one seat, and that this be reserved for President Juso. According to Seiler Graf, Juso’s permanent headquarters should allow “deeper cooperation” between the SP and its rebellious young party.
Now the SP base has to decide whether to follow the recommendation of the party leadership and involve Juso more closely, or whether to keep them at bay. Finally, Meyer and Wermuth, two old Jusos, who also know the young party very well, take the lead.
