Ruin for a traditional company
“This is the most difficult moment of my whole life”: Café-Confiserie Hirt in Frauenfeld closes after 25 years
The traditional company Frauenfeld Café-Confiserie Hirt in the “Rhyhof” went bankrupt. This is the end of a 70-year history of sweet creations on Rheinstrasse.
A piece of Frauenfeld history. This is how Café-Confiserie Hirt on Rheinstrasse is described according to their own information. Now this story is coming to an abrupt end, as Managing Director Markus Hirt announced Tuesday afternoon. Because on the same day he had to painfully open bankruptcy in the Frauenfeld district court for the sole proprietorship Café-Confiserie Hirt with a shop, restaurant, hotel and catering area. He says:
“It’s a disaster. I’m so sorry.”
The increasingly difficult environment in the catering industry and the three-year-to-2018 post-construction site in the immediate vicinity have left their mark on the traditional company. The new post office is great for Frauenfeld, says Hirt. However, as a neighbor on a major project, it was anything but fun.
Even structural adjustments and reorganization would not have brought the desired success for the turnaround. Hirt talks about attempts to adapt working and opening hours, as well as range, to difficult circumstances. In vain.
Great café known in Viennese style
After all, the crown pandemic and its effects made it impossible to continue operations with the decrease in the number of guests. Gastronomy and especially hotels and restaurants would have suffered a fatal drop in sales under the management requirements of the pandemic. Pastor fights for words and says:
“Everything fell apart completely.”
The Hirt family has run the business at Rheinstrasse 11 for almost 25 years with passion, innovation and attention to detail. Markus and Rosmarie Hirt would have tried everything to save the traditional company, whose history dates back to 1948. The interior of the famous Viennese-style Grand Café demonstrates its long history.
Since then, only three generations have looked after the sweet creations at the “Rhyhof”, as the Café-Confiserie Hirt website showed. After the initial launch of Fridolin Winiger, Maria and Paul Müggler took over the business for 29 years before Markus and Rosmarie Hirt continued with the traditional company in 1996, which is now owned by Alfred Oppikofer AG and Staub Treuhand AG.
Around 30 employees lose their jobs
Markus and Rosmarie Hirt have tried everything they can to keep the current 30 jobs. “Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful,” Hirt says. The Hirts had to relay their bad news to employees at a meeting Tuesday afternoon. Pastor says:
“This is the most difficult moment of my entire life.”
The information process for employees had been coordinated as far as possible with the responsible authorities and was carried out in consultation and cooperation with the bankruptcy office, the unemployment fund and the regional employment agency (RAV). In any case, the blinds on Rheinstrasse 11 will be closed with immediate effect. The message ends with the phrase: “This is the best possible care for those affected in this difficult situation.”
