- On June 1, 2020, there were 78,832 vacant apartments in Switzerland, which represents 1.72 percent of the total housing stock.
- Compared with the previous year, 3,449 more departments were left vacant, which corresponds to an increase of 4.6 percent.
- This means that the increase in the vacancy rate that began more than ten years ago remains unchanged.
This is clear from the census of vacant apartments carried out by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). The number of vacant apartments offered on the market on June 1, 2020 increased in five of the top seven regions.
The largest increases were recorded in the Greater Ticino and Lake Geneva regions (+0.42 and +0.21 percentage points, respectively). Only the main regions of Eastern Switzerland and Espace Mittelland registered a slight decrease in the vacancy rate compared to the previous year.
Less empty apartments in the canton of Geneva
As in the previous year, the canton of Solothurn had the highest vacancy rate in Switzerland (3.22 percent) and was also the only canton above the three percent mark. High vacancy rates were also found in the cantons of Ticino (2.71 percent), Aargau (2.65 percent) and Jura (2.52 percent).
The lowest figure was recorded in the canton of Geneva (0.49 percent). In the cantons of Zug (0.70 per cent), Zurich (0.91 per cent), Obwalden (0.92 per cent) and Basel-Stadt (0.96 per cent), the vacancy rate remained below one percent.
