The pandemic creates inequality: the girls most affected by the corona crisis – News

  • Girls suffer more from the consequences of the corona pandemic than boys. Here’s what a new study says.
  • The children’s rights organization “Save the Children” surveyed 25,000 children and adults in 37 countries around the world, many of them in Asia and Africa.
  • The conclusion of the study: girls would have had to work at home more often than boys, while schools were closed.

One in five girls surveyed stated that they had not learned anything during this time. With boys it was only one in ten. According to the authors, children from poorer families are more affected than those from richer families.

In most states, schools were completely closed for several weeks and classes were taught online, if at all. One in five girls surveyed stated that they had not learned anything during this time. It was only one in ten children. In poor families in particular, this was mainly due to a lack of Internet access: less than one percent of the households that were classified as poor were able to guarantee the necessary Internet access.

Covid-19 has increased existing inequalities.

In the wealthiest households, one in five surveyed families had access to the Internet. Obtaining learning materials was also often a problem for poor households.

Almost two-thirds of the girls surveyed said they had to work at home more often than before during the pandemic, while this was not even the case for half of the boys. Girls were also more in demand when taking care of their siblings.

“Covid-19 has increased existing inequalities, with dramatic consequences for children,” said Save the Children Germany Director Susanne Krüger. “To protect an entire generation from the loss of their future, low-income countries and fragile states must be supported to invest in their children,” demanded the child rights activist.
